Miele recalls gas dryers due to risk of gas leak or fire (2008)

Recall overview

This voluntary safety recall (CPSC Alert #08-577) was conducted in cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission and covers certain Miele Inc. residential gas dryers.

  • Recall date: May 29, 2008
  • Product: Residential super-large capacity gas dryers
  • Units: About 3,100
  • Model affected: T 9820
  • Manufactured in: Czech Republic

Safety note: Consumers should stop using recalled products immediately unless otherwise instructed. Reselling a recalled product is illegal.

What’s the hazard?

If the dryer is improperly installed, an internal gas fitting can loosen, allowing gas to leak into the home. An undetected gas leak can lead to asphyxiation, fire, or explosion.

In addition, one or both caps on the internal exhaust duct can become dislodged. This can cause lint buildup, and lint may be carried through the gas burner, increasing the risk of fire.

  • 11 reports worldwide of consumers smelling gas after installation
  • 1 report of a fire with property damage
  • No injuries reported
