Liebherr expands recall of refrigerators due to injury hazard (2011)
Recall overview
Liebherr expanded a recall covering certain freestanding 30-inch wide bottom freezer refrigerators after reports that the door can detach, creating an injury hazard.
- Recall date: November 16, 2011
- Remedy: Free in-home repair
- Units affected: About 8,000
- (This expansion follows the March 2011 recall of about 5,700 built-in 30-inch bottom freezer refrigerators.)
- Recall number: 12-043
What’s the safety issue?
On the affected units, the door hinge hardware can loosen and the door may detach. A detached door can fall or shift unexpectedly, posing a risk of bruises, strains, or other injuries.
What to do now
- Inspect the top hinge area immediately.
A key warning sign is a hinge pin that looks “popped up” at the top, which can indicate the pin is loosening. - Schedule the free in-home repair with Liebherr as soon as possible.
- Can you keep using it?
- If the hinge is not loose and the door is working normally, you may continue using the refrigerator until it’s repaired.
- If the hinge pin is raised/popped or the door feels unstable, stop using it and contact Liebherr right away.

FAQ
How do I know if my freestanding Liebherr refrigerator is included?
Check the label behind the bottom drawer for the model and index number. If your model is CS 1601, CS 1640, or CS 1650 with one of the listed index numbers, it’s included.
What does “expanded recall” mean here?
This notice expands recall coverage to additional units (and follows an earlier March 2011 recall of built-in models).
What should I look for during inspection?
A top hinge pin that is raised or “popped up” can be a sign the hinge is loosening.
