BSH Home Appliances Expands Recall of Dishwashers Due to Fire Hazard

Quick overview

A safety recall expansion was issued on October 20, 2017 for certain dishwashers sold under multiple premium appliance brands. The issue involves the dishwasher power cord, which can overheat and potentially ignite, creating a fire hazard.

  • Remedy: Free inspection + repair
  • Units affected: ~408,000 (U.S.) + ~61,000 (Canada)
  • Earlier related recall: October 1, 2015 (about 149,000 units). The date range was expanded for some of those previously recalled models.
  • Recall ID: 18-013

What’s the problem?

The power cord may overheat. In rare cases, this can lead to smoke, melting, or fire, with possible property damage.

Reported incidents: 5 reports of overheating/fire with property damage. No injuries reported.

What you should do now

  1. Stop using the dishwasher immediately.
  2. Unplug it (or switch off the circuit breaker if the plug isn’t accessible).
  3. Contact the manufacturer for a free inspection and repair through BSH Home Appliances Corporation.

How to check your dishwasher (model + serial)

To confirm whether your unit is included, locate:

  • Model number (begins with a short code like SHE, SHX, DWHD, etc.)
  • Serial/FD number range (shown as FD xxxx–xxxx)

Where to find the label: Inside the dishwasher — typically on the top edge of the inner door panel or along the side of the door frame.

Affected products (by brand / model prefix / FD range)

Note: “*” marks models that were part of the Oct 1, 2015 recall; their FD date range was expanded in this 2017 update.

FAQ

Can I keep using it if it “seems fine”?
No. This issue can appear without warning. Stop use until it’s inspected/repaired.

Do I need a new dishwasher?
This recall’s remedy is repair, not replacement.

What if my model code matches, but my FD range doesn’t?
Then it may not be included. The FD range is essential for confirming eligibility.

Is this the same as the 2015 recall?
It’s an expansion. Some models from 2015 (marked with “*”) have a broader FD range under the 2017 recall.
